A short while ago I put a book recommendation on our page. The book was called Nature's Best Hope by an American entomologist and conservationist, Doug Tallamy. The simple message of the book is that every person owes a debt to the life services offered by our planet. Every person should be doing something to protect and encourage biodiversity.
According to Tallamy, lawn is a major enemy as are weed tree species. Ever since reading the book I have been noticing weed tree species far too frequently everywhere on the Sunshine Coast; Camphor Laurels, Chinese Elm, Umbrella Tree, African tulip etc etc. Easter Cassia is everywhere!
I have been noticing lawn grass in far too many places. [Try it yourself - drive around a suburb and everywhere there is lawn imagine if it could be replaced with native gardens.]
So I am starting in my yard and encourage all to do the same. Set yourself the challenge of reducing lawn and replace it with a variety of local native tree, shrubs and ground covers [check out Barung nursery or any of the local Landcare nurseries. Or Fairhill Native nursery is now re-opened.] Get rid of at least one exotic tree from your yard and replant a native or two. Encourage your friends, family and enemies to do the same.
Read Doug's book and / or check out the video below and listen to he man himself. Although it is full of American specifics please consider that the general principles would apply here.
