Parklakes, Bli Bli on a Saturday

Azure Kingfisher [Bernadine Hine]

Nearly 40 people found Parklakes, Bli Bli for an early morning wander around the suburban wetlands. Forty folk necessitated three groups and, all told, we recorded nearly 70 bird species.

This once brilliant wetland has never reclaimed its former glory sadly as Greg Roberts described in 2016

Still it is still home to a reasonable variety of species and a particularly good site for beginning birders with an easy flat surfaced walkway.

One of the birding highlights was a juvenile Koel being fed by duped Noisy Friarbird parents.

JANUARY 2021

Our first saturday outing will occur soon on the 30 January at Parklakes in Bli Bli; meeting at 7am. Full details are below. This is an easy site; flat with a mixture of vegetation types that offer the promise of a reasonable variety of birds.

Please note that there are no public toilets at Parklakes nor Burton Road.

At our Saturday outing, prior to the bird call, I am hoping to introduce a very minor fund raising effort; a raffle. $1 per ticket. The prize? Your choice of one of a variety of bird related books that have been donated. Many of these titles have been donated by a member, Dianne Goodwillie, who has recently returned to Canada. I thank her for her donation. So please bring a dollar coin and you may find your home library slightly enhanced…

Post bird walk, bird call and chit chat I am suggesting we can car pool and visit the nearby Burtons Road. This has been dubbed by some the new Finland Road. And like Finland there is not any one place but a long road with a variety of habitats that allow for good road-side birding. Recently a few interesting species have been recorded; Wood Sandpiper and Horsefield’s Bushlark to name a couple from 2021. For others there are a variety of worthy nearby sites including the Maroochy Wetland Sanctuary and Finland Road.
