Location –  This will be a birds and wildflower walk [for something a little different….]

Other details – This reserve is a small remnant of wallum heath that was once a common plant community along the Sunshine Coast. Short walks, wildflowers, coastal birds, and views of the ocean beach and lake feature here. Vividly coloured heath wildflowers reach their peak flowering time in late winter and spring months.

The park is named after Kathleen McArthur, a local artist, conservationist and founding member of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (1962). Kathleen was passionate about wallum heathlands and campaigned to have these plant communities protected in the Sunshine Coast region. The heathland wildflowers were a favourite subject for her botanical illustrations.

Other details – Annie Hehir Environment Reserve is an exceptional conservation area. It contains high biodiversity values and pristine waterways. These include: Large areas of Eucalypt forest and rainforest, 98 native plant species, including threatened plants such as the Maroochy nut (species name), 145 native animal species, including threatened animals such as the giant barred frog (species name). The Reserve was created when two properties in Peachester were purchased using Environment Levy funds in 2011 and 2017.

Location – Gheerulla Falls Track, near Mapleton

Location –  Please meet at the Mapleton Lilyponds at 7am. We will sign on and then carpool to the track head – there is limited parking there.

Other details – The walk is circa 2 kilometres return and follows a ridge line down to a small creek. It then returns the same way. This can be a very good track for pigeon species. Superb Fruit-dove has been recorded there.

NOVEMBER WEEKEND AWAY – Saturday and Sunday, 27 and 28 November 2021

[If interest allows] A weekend birding in Brisbane, incorporating a full day Saturday Wader Workshop with the Queensland Wader Studies Group. The workshop will feature presentations on Wader Taxonomy and Identification, Migration, Breeding, Banding Studies and Conservation. Included in this day will be a circa two-hour visit to the Manly Roost where we will be able to put our Wader ID skills to the test….

We will spend the Sunday morning, not sleeping in, but exploring some of the better birding sites of Eastern Brisbane before returning to Nambour at c. 5pm.

Other details – Take the Mapleton Road from either Nambour or Mapleton and opposite the Dulong Lookout at Kanyana Park turn into Kureelpa Falls Road. Follow the road along the ridge (great views) to its far end (last section is on gravel) where there is room to park before the gated access to the Park. No facilities. [Closest at Dulong Lookout.]
